Chapter 5

1.

Being a Crud had its advantages. They really did replace the family a person lost through life’s events. I found that there was always someone to talk to, many sharing my passion for Stephen King. To my delight, I also found one guy, Jack Patterson, who actually wrote what you’d call “fan fiction”.

We met during a particularly bad lunchtime, almost a month after I passed the initiation. The meal served to us that day was a mixture of road-carcass and baby vomit. It was supposed to be slow-cooked ragout with beans, the menu making it sound mouth-watering. Too bad the delivery didn’t follow suit, many opting for toast once they saw the dish in person.

Jack was sitting opposite me at the table with 5 other Cruds. We were all sitting around in a circle, remarking how bad it was, when Jack made a comment that pricked my ears.

“Reminds me of a certain Hungarian Goulash the General once pointed out.” The second the words left his mouth; I knew what he was talking about. His surprise at hearing my reply must have matched my own expression because a couple of the boys commented about the impending bromance blooming.

“Yah, but Campion managed to flee half way across the country anyway,” was what I replied and it was Jack’s turn to prick his ears.

“Half way across the country? How did he do that?” he answered back, mimicking Ed Harris’s character from the show.

The rest of the lads paused, some with their forks halfway to their mouths. Jack and I just looked at each other, then suddenly began to laugh. The others must have thought us mad as we sat like idiots, cackling like a couple of girls.

“Man, how the fuck did you recognize that reference?” Jack asked once he got himself back under control.

“I must have watched that show at least a thousand times,” I replied. “You like Stephen King?”

“Oh my God, another one,” Hal said from beside me. I looked at him then back at Jack who was now wearing a shy grin.

“Guess you haven’t been to Jack’s cell yet,” Wilson said through a mouthful of the stew. He was the only one enjoying it, a couple of the others giving him their bowls. I looked back at Jack, hopeful.

“You’ve got his books?” I asked, hopeful. Jack pondered for a brief moment.

“Yeah, I got some. But I also write some.”

“You write Stephen King books?” I asked, confused.

“Not exactly. Come by my place after chow time and I’ll show you.” Hal began to chuckle at that.

“Yah, just make sure you don’t close the door or others will get the wrong idea.”

2.

I didn’t wait for long to go and see what Jack had meant. The second I saw him disappear into his own cell; I made the walk from my own doorway. Jackie Friendly was sitting in the station with Wells and a new officer. I hadn’t caught his name but saw his nervous face above the counter. He didn’t look too comfortable, constantly looking across the unit at several congregations.
